Nainital, the charming Himalayan lake town, is a picture-postcard perfect hill-station and one of the most popular in Northern India. Commonly known as the ‘Lake District’, Nainital is nestled high up in the Kumaon Himalayas at an altitude of around 2,000 m above sea level. This beautiful town in surrounded by seven hills, popularly known as ‘Sapta-Shring’ – Ayarpata, Deopata, Handi-Bandi, Naina, Alma, Lariya-Kanta and Sher-Ka-Danda. According to mythology, the lake is believed to have been formed when the eyes of goddess “Sati” fell at this spot while her body was being carried by Lord Shiva after her death.

Naini Lake
It is a pear shaped lake,which�is the most famous attraction of Nanital. Hemmed in by magnificent hills, the lake is very beautiful. It sparkles like a jewel at night in moonlight. The lake is believed to be one of the 64 Shakti Peeths or religious sites. It is the place where the burnt body of Sati(Parvati) fell on earth while being carried by the Lord Shiva. And the spot where Sati's eye(or Nain) fell, came to be known as Naintal. There is a famous Naina Devi temple near the lake where the goddess Shakti is worshiped. Tourists can enjoy boating in the lake, which is truly an exhilarating experience.
Naina Peak
Offering breathtaking views of the mountain peaks, Naina Peak is the highest peak of Nanital. It has an elevation of 2611 m and is located only 6 km from the main town of Nanital. One can reach the peak on ponies or horses. This peak is also known as China Peak.
